🌱Win Gold at the Placer County Fair! + Folsom Cockroaches + Band Fest

Welcome back, Roseville! Let’s get you all caught up to start this Friday, May 20 off on an informed note. Here’s what’s going on in Roseville today.

First, today’s weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 83 Low: 52.

Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. The Roseville Aquatics Complex opens May 28 by reservation only due to ongoing construction. Once it’s complete there will be a new slide and spray park to keep those little ones busy during the sometimes brutal summers in Roseville. Unfortunately, due to supply constraints, the construction will not be complete by the start of the summer. There is no ETA on completion other than being hopeful that it will be done “some time this summer.” It’ll be cool (literally) when it’s done, though! (Roseville Today)
  2. Do you make a blueberry pie that makes your neighbors green with envy? The Placer County Fair is accepting applications from residents to compete for awards in dozens of categories – from baking to beer-making – and vendors looking to sell their arts and crafts or food at one of the largest and longest-running events in Placer Valley. The Placer County Fair opens @the Grounds on Thursday, June 23, and continues through Sunday, June 26. The fair is open 5-11 pm Thursday through Saturday and noon to 11 pm Sunday at 700 Event Center Drive in Roseville (formerly known as the Placer County Fairgrounds). Get your apron out and your chef on and sign up! (Roseville Today)
  3. This year, EcoGuard Pest Management has already received several hundred roach reports in Folsom and are expecting to see thousands in the coming months. Last summer, they had nearly 100 reports of roach sightings in the Folsom area alone and this year reports are getting underway early. “Roaches are often found at homes that are in front of storm drains, sewer openings or irrigation boxes,” Akoni Berman, the director of Quality Control for EcoGuard Pest Management said. This article from News 10 gives tips from EcoGuard if you do see any cockroaches in or near your home. (ABC10)
  4. A prodigy at 5 years old, Mariam Ryder knew she wanted to help feed those in need. At the age of 11, her father helped her form a nonprofit to do just that. In 2018, Mariam and her father founded LEOA Foundation, which stands for Love Each Other Always, to provide food to those in the area. LEOA gives out food every Thursday starting about noon at Calvary Christian Center Loomis at 4655 King Road. The foundation also distributes at Calvary Christian Center Sacramento every Tuesday, starting about 11:30 am The nonprofit has expanded in the ensuing years, giving away toys at Christmas and even sponsoring parenting classes. Mariam juggles the nonprofit, her studies and her friends as she grows her impact to the community. Her story is truly inspiring. (Gold Country Media)
  5. The annual Community Band Festival returns to Carmichael Park on June 4 and 5. The tradition has united hundreds of musicians in a brass and woodwind blow-out for more than two decades. Music will include marches, swing and pop selections. Players will range in age from teens to nonagenarians. Beginning at noon on both Saturday and Sunday, seven bands are on the daily lineup. There is no charge for audience attendance. Picnickers and dancers are welcome. (Carmichael Times)
